The German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, said on Tuesday that he wanted a new law to prevent neo-Nazis from demonstrating in front of monuments to the victims of the Holocaust. He was reacting to an announcement from the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) that its supporters will gather in Berlin on 08 May, the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, to protest against "the lie" hat Germany was "liberated" from the Nazis. It is expected that the demonstrators will try to reach the Holocaust memorial currently under construction in the center of the city. Discussing his proposal, Mr. Schroeder said "I am among those people who finds it unacceptable that anyone can demonstrate and shout extreme-right slogans in front of monuments to the victims of the Holocaust. That is why I am in favor of a law governing gatherings which respect the right of free speech and the right to demonstrate but which allows the possibility of saying 'no' in some cases."
