The Brazilian metropolis São Paulo – which has 11.4 million inhabitants and is considered the 14th-largest city in the world - has declared the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur as well as the Islamic fast month Ramadan as official holidays, thus allowing Jewish and Muslim municipal workers to take two days off on these occasions.
The city of São Paulo has approximately 147,000 employees.
The inclusion of these dates to the municipal list of holidays will be the first time that the municipality recognizes a non-Christian holiday in that manner, according to a statement issued by the municipality and reported by the news agency JTA.
