The Latin American Jewish Congress (LAJC) has awarded its 'Shalom Prize' to Chilean president Michelle Bachelet. The prize, which was awarded for the first time, honors “builders of peace between peoples.” The award ceremony took place at the presidential palace 'La Moneda' in Santiago de Chile. LAJC president Jack Terpins said that Bachelet was a “clear example for what the world expects from its political leaders: that they work for a more peaceful and safer world, for democracy, the full respect for human rights and for minorities.”
World Jewish Congress (WJC) treasurer Eduardo Elsztain, WJC secretary-general Michael Schneider and leaders of Chile’s Jewish community led by their president, Gabriel Zaliasnik, also attended the ceremony. Schneider praised President Bachelet’s record of building an inclusive society in which human rights and the rights of minorities are respected. “Thanks to Michelle Bachelet’s work, today’s Chile is an example for the peaceful cohabitation of minorities in society,” he said.
