Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) leaders have expressed disappointment about a ruling by Canada’s telecommunications authority that does not allow Internet service providers to block access to websites that contain hate messages. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) denied an application last week from Richard Warman, an Ottawa human-rights lawyer. Warman had sought to block a website that encourages violence against him and even gives his home address. The site is maintained by Bill White, described in the application as a neo-Nazi and white supremacist. “In our view, the content on these websites clearly breaches Canada’s criminal code and we are deeply disappointed that the CRTC did not accept its responsibility to respond to a private citizen’s complaint,” said CJC president Ed Morgan.
