In Strasbourg, a British member of the European Parliament has been thrown out of the debating chamber after directing a Nazi jibe at a German colleague. Godfrey Bloom said the Nazi slogan "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer" (‘one people, one empire, one leader’) - as Martin Schulz, the leader of the Socialist Group in the European assembly, was making a speech on the financial crisis in Ireland.
Bloom was reprimanded by the speaker, Jerzy Buzek, a former Polish prime minister. When he failed to apologize, Buzek, told him: "As you know, most of the members of the chamber cannot accept your behavior. I will therefore ask you to leave the chamber at this point." The Eurosceptic Bloom, who represents the UK Independence Party in Strasbourg and Brussels, later told the BBC that he stood by his words, describing Schulz as "a National Socialist".
