Anti-Semitic incidents in Argentina rose strongly during the past year, according to a study released by the Jewish umbrella group DAIA. 540 cases of anti-Semitism were reported in 2006, up 32 per cent from 2005, when 376 attacks were reported. Compared to the first study compiled in 1998, anti-Jewish incidents and attacks have increased 600 per cent.
The full report by DAIA's Center for Social Studies will be released soon. In an interview with the newspaper "Clarín", DAIA president Aldo Donzis emphasized that "Argentina is not an anti-Semitic country, but there are small groups of people who revert to anti-Semitism, believing that because Israel is an ally of the United States, they must treat it as an imperialist, colonialist and invading state".
