Germany’s Jewish community is protesting against plans by neo-Nazis to demonstrate on the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. Right-wing extremists say that on 8 May 2005, they will hold a rally at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate to protest “against 60 years of liberation lies” and for "an end to the cult of guilt”. The city landmark, located in the government quarter, is only steps away from the new Holocaust memorial which is to be dedicated at that time. Calling the planned right-wing extremist demonstration a “scandalous provocation and slap in the face of democracy,” Paul Spiegel, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, urged politicians not to ignore the threat. In a press release, Spiegel said all supporters of democracy in Germany should be asking how to react after the recent election gains by right-wing extremist parties in the former East German states of Saxony and Brandenburg.
