UNHRC’s Anti-Israel Bias - World Jewish Congress
UNHRC’s Anti-Israel Bias

UNHRC’s Anti-Israel Bias

41st Session
Item 7:
General Debate
Representative delivering the statement: Natasha Hausdorff
United Kingdom

Thank you Mr. President,

The agenda item under which we meet is shamefully biased, tarnishing the reputation of this Council by allowing it to be used as an instrument of political manipulation.

The German State Secretary, Antje Leendertse, in a recent meeting with the World Jewish Congress, was right to call this agenda item ‘antisemitic’. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was right to condemn the decision to implement this agenda item. The United Kingdom was right to censure this agenda item’s discriminatory focus on Israel, committing to voting against resolutions under it.

This is not enough; the reprehensible practice of propagating the ancient blood libel against the only Jewish state persists in this Council, in its obsession with persecuting Israel.

Apart from being used as a tool to slander Israel, this agenda item serves to deflect attention away from the worst human rights violators of the modern era.

The late Elie Wiesel famously said that the opposite of love, was not hate, but indifference.

The World Jewish Congress calls on all those honest governments here to end their indifference; to take a moral stand against this biased, malicious agenda; to end the abuse and the misapplication of international law and the wrongful condemnation of the only human rights protecting democracy in the Middle East.

Thank you.
