Iran’s Support for Terrorism & Human Rights Abuses

Iran’s Support for Terrorism & Human Rights Abuses

43rd Session
Item 4:
Representative delivering the statement: Mr. Ilan Scialom ,
France

Thank you, Madam President.

The World Jewish Congress is gravely concerned by the threat posed by Iran. As we have stated many times before this Council, Iran is playing a destabilizing role in the Middle East and beyond, as a state sponsor of international terrorism, in its quest to become a nuclear power and in its bid to gain hegemony over the region.

Iran has exported terrorism well beyond its borders through its support of terrorist groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad, to name a few. Iran continues to call for the annihilation of the State of Israel, in flagrant violation of the basic principles on the UN Charter. Jews and Israelis have been targets of Iranian terrorist attacks as far as Argentina and Bulgaria.

We also remain appalled by Iran’s disregard for democratic freedoms and the fundamental rights of its citizens. Iran violates daily the human rights of its own people, including through the persecution of protesters, religious and ethnic minorities, human rights defenders and independent journalists.

The World Jewish Congress urges, once again, this Council to fully recognize the threat the Iranian regime poses to international and regional stability and calls on the international community to take appropriate actions accordingly.

Thank you
