WJC at UNHRC | Statement on the UPR Outcome of the Federated State of Micronesia

At the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, WJC's International Relations Officer, Damon Biesold, delivered a statement on the UPR Outcome of the Federated State of Micronesia.

Mr. President,

The World Jewish Congress welcomes the progress reflected in the report, including Micronesia's continued efforts towards strengthening gender equality through the National Gender Equality Policy and the National Policy to Eliminate Violence against Women and Girls. We particularly note the steady advancement of women's representation in public life and the strengthening of mechanisms to address gender-based violence across the states.

As Micronesia continues to deepen this institutional commitment to human rights, we welcome its strong commitment to counter racism, hatred, antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. In this regard, we thank Micronesia for joining the Joint Statement on Antisemitism last year, a meaningful expression of solidarity at a time when Jewish communities worldwide face a documented rise in antisemitic incidents. We also thank Micronesia for its support of the exhibition Sports. Crowds. Power, presented last September, here at the UN, which told the story of Jewish athletes and clubs persecuted during the Holocaust.

Building on these steps, we further encourage Micronesia to join the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and adopt its working definitions of antisemitism and of Holocaust denial and distortion, further institutionalizing the fight against antisemitism and discrimination, with the aim to build an even more open and resilient society.

We wish the Government of Micronesia continued success in its efforts to promote and protect human rights.
