Two Jordanians are dead following an attack on the Israeli embassy in Amman on Sunday in which an Israeli security officer was stabbed in the stomach.
Assailant Mohammed Zakaria al-Jawawdeh, 17, attacked the unnamed guard with a screwdriver as he moved furniture through the closed diplomatic compound. The guard opened fire in self-defense, killing his assailant and the owner of the compound.
According to a Foreign Ministry statement quoted by the Jerusalem Post, the Jordanians have refused to allow the guard to return to Israel despite his diplomatic immunity.
Israeli media was barred from reporting the incident until Monday morning despite coverage of the violence in foreign media readily accessible there.
According to the Jerusalem Post on Twitter, the Embassy was evacuated following the incident. The entire compound was reported to have been placed under temporary lockdown and surrounded by Jordanian anti-terrorism troops.
Protesters in Amman, angry over Israel’s placement of metal detectors at the entrances to the Temple Mount, chanted "How beautiful it is to kill soldiers from Jerusalem” during a demonstration last week.
