According to Bernard Stasi, the former chairman of the Commission which reported on the relationship between State and religions in France and proposed the controversial ban of religious symbols in schools, a national holiday might be created by the French Culture minister for people with non-Catholic beliefs. Stasi said the minister was "thinking seriously" about this issue, especially in view of the fact that Muslims are now the second-largest religious group in France, and public holidays still largely mirror the Christian calendar. He thinks it "indispensable" to make this or a similar gesture to non-Catholics in France.
