A Jewish group supporting George Bush's campaign for re-election has gathered in New York on Monday, on the first day of the Republican Convention that will formally nominate the incumbent president as Republican candidate for the November poll. The event was hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) and attended by the majority leader of the US House of Representatives Tom DeLay, senators Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter, the staunchly anti-Arafat congressman Eric Cantor, and other Republican front men. Speakers pledged support for Israel. Fred Zeidman, RJC vice-chairman and Bush-appointed chairman of the US Holocaust Memorial Council, said Jews should vote for Bush because "he's the single greatest friend the state of Israel has ever had."
