The French government has announced that it would take decisive action against Lebanon's Al-Manar television station, saying it would shortly seek new powers from parliament to suspend stations inciting hatred or racist comments. Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin announced the decision after a meeting with Dominique Baudis, the head of the French broadcasting authority CSA. Baudis had called on Tuesday for a ban on Al-Manar's broadcasts to Europe. The government will ask parliament to vote tougher laws allowing the immediate suspension of channels "undermining public order, notably by broadcasting images that incite hatred or racist comments," Raffarin's office said in a statement. Action was needed because of the "legitimate emotion and the trouble caused by the broadcasting of unacceptable programmes by Al-Manar," it added. The Lebanese station, mouthpiece of the Hezbollah group, has caused outrage in France by claiming Zionists were trying to export AIDS to Arab countries.
