A California university has imposed sanctions on local chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, an extreme anti-Zionist student movement, following an incident in which its members disrupted a pro-Israel event and verbally abused attendees.
The University of California, Irvine slapped the group with disciplinary probation for two academic years, due to the group’s behavior during an event in May held by "Reservists on Duty,” an Israeli organization. According to video of the incident, SJP members crowded the room and disrupted speakers by clapping and chanting phrases such as “hey, hey. Ho, ho. These colonizers have got to go” and “Israel, you can't hide, we charge you with genocide.”
The group also chanted that "when people are occupied resistance is justified.” Resistance is frequently used as a euphemism for terrorist activity by Palestinians.
After a review, the UCI administration decided to sanction SJP, announcing in a statement that during the probationary period "the organization must abide by UCI’s standards of conduct, meet with the Dean of Students six times per year to discuss free speech issues, and consult with a representative of the dean’s office before hosting or co-hosting any campus event.”
"Any further violations of university policy may result in suspension or a revocation of the organization’s status,” the university said.
