NEW YORK - The World Jewish Congress was deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s longtime ambassador to the United Nations.
Ambassador Churkin proudly represented his country in the United Nations and worked tirelessly to promote a better understanding between the American people and the people of Russia in a time of mounting tensions between the two countries.
“I was always struck by the huge respect he showed for the Jewish people and, especially, to the Russian Jewish veterans of the Second World War, who fought against and were victorious over the Nazis,” World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder said.
“For me, it is a personal loss. I knew Ambassador Churkin well. I enjoyed our dinners together and his very engaging personality,” Lauder added. “When Vitaly Churkin walked into the room, you just knew you were in for an interesting evening. His presence will be deeply missed not just at the UN, but everywhere.”
