Israel's Ambassador to Egypt David Govrin arrived in Cairo two weeks ago and together with the chairwoman of Egypt's tiny Jewish community, Magda Haroun, paid a visit to the capital's historic synagogues.
Govrin had visited famous synagogues together with Haroun and some of his staff, the Israel Embassy announced on Wednesday.
Visits were paid to Ben Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, the Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue in downtown Cairo, and the Meyr Biton synagogue in Maadi.
The Ben Ezra Ssynagogue is considered one of the oldest known Jewish houses of worship in Cairo.
It was Govrin's first public outing as new Israeli ambassador to Egypt, where he replaced Haim Koren.
Govrin was posted as a diplomat in Cairo during the 1990s and speaks Arabic fluently.
Although there are no official estimates, only around two dozen Egyptian Jews still live in the country, once the home of a Jewish community of some 80,000. Egypt is the largest Arab country and only one of two to have full diplomatic relations with Israel.
