Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas promised to “drop a bombshell" in his speech to the UN General Assembly” in New York later this month, though he refused to reveal what that bombshell will be. Abbas is slated to speak at the United Nations gathering on 29 September.
Speaking to Arab media in an interview set to broadcast next week, he said the “bombshell” would concern the peace process with Israel and purported Israeli violations of the Oslo accords, according to a report by the Israeli news site 'Ynet'.
He again criticized Israel's demand for the Palestinians to recognize it as a Jewish state and claimed that a state’s existence on religious grounds gave legitimacy for jihadist movements in the region.
“If Israel wants to be a Jewish state, it provides legitimacy to the Islamic State and others," said Abbas.
Abbas also reacted to recent events on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, allegeing that Israel wanted to divide the sanctuary between Jews and Muslims in terms of space and prayer times. He said the Palestinians would never let something like that happen.
