On February 11, 2014, World Jewish Congress, North America was privileged to host Mrs. Faina Kukliansky, the president of the Jewish community of Lithuania.
Evelyn Sommer, Chair, World Jewish Congress, North America greeted and introduced Mrs. Kukliansky, and Michael Schneider, WJC Senior Advisor, spoke about the history of the World Jewish Congress with the Lithuanian Jewish community and the close working relationship that he and Mrs. Kukliansky have had over the years collaborating on many issues important to the global Jewish community.
Mrs. Kukliansky addressed items uppermost on the WJC agenda such as the status of Jewish education in her community including Judaic studies and the study of Yiddish, the issue of the community efforts to reclaim Jewish property confiscated during World War II, and the relationships of the Jewish community with other ethnic groups in Lithuania.
The WJC representatives asked questions of Mrs. Kukliansky on community relations, anti-Semitism, and the issue of Jewish identity and assimilation. Mrs. Sommer, on behalf of the World Jewish Congress, pledged to strengthen the relationship between the WJC and the Jewish community of Lithuania to enable successful cooperation on many important issues of common concern.
