World Jewish Congress mourns passing of former Yad Vashem Chairman Yitzhak Arad

09 May 2021

The World Jewish Congress is deeply saddened by the passing of former Yad Vashem Chairman Yitzhak "Tolka" Arad.

Eulogizing Arad, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder said: "Yitzhak Arad's long and fruitful life symbolized the miraculous journey from the darkness of the Holocaust to Jewish national rebirth. A heroic partisan who ferociously  fought the Germans and their local Lithuanian accessories, he joined the Palmach and the struggle for a Jewish State as soon as he arrived in the Land of Israel. Arad rose to the rank of brigadier general and chief educational officer of the Israel Defense Forces. He devoted his life to the remembrance of the Shoah and left behind a prodigious body of scholarship on the destruction of Jews on Soviet territory and on Jewish resistance to the Nazis. May his memory be for a blessing."
