GENEVA – The World Jewish Congress deplores the five biased resolutions against Israel adopted today and Friday by the UN Human Rights Council. Four of these texts were included under the Council’s notorious agenda item 7, the only item that singles out one UN member state.
World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder condemned the UN body’s obsessive focus on Israel. “It is completely absurd,” he said, “that during this unprecedented crisis, when Israel has been widely praised for its successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic, including extending life-saving humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians, the Human Rights Council has decided to continue its one-sided attacks against the Jewish state. The cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians was explicitly lauded by Nickolay Mladenov, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. The HRC’s bias is now more glaring than ever before.
“As usual, little mention was made of violations committed by the terrorist group Hamas, such as the firing of rockets against Israeli civilians, or transgressions committed by the Palestinian Authority. Rather, the Council continued its long, one-sided anti-Israel tirade, without any regard for the real facts on the ground.”
Amb. Lauder praised Australia, which voted against all five draft resolutions. In addition, he recognized the objections to some of the drafts by several countries, including Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Fiji, Germany, Marshall Islands, Togo and Ukraine. “For the Council to fully live up to its potential, more countries need to speak up and oppose these one-sided resolutions. Such a necessary and principled stance will hopefully lead to this body adopting resolutions that accurately reflect events in an impartial manner.”
