WJC US calls for 'sensitive and responsible' American immigration policy

The World Jewish Congress - United States (American Section, Inc.) has called on the US government to support a “sensitive and responsible immigration policy that adheres to the noblest American tradition of helping those seeking peace and freedom” while “ensuring the safety and security” of all of its citizens against the threat of terror.

WJC-US Chairman Rabbi Joel H. Meyers said in a statement: “The World Jewish Congress, United States (American Section, Inc.) believes that as a country that from its very inception has been built by immigrants, the United States must remain true to its principles as a haven for the downtrodden.  From the outset, the Pilgrims fleeing religious persecution sought freedom on these shores, followed by others seeking refuge from oppressive regimes.

“The United States must remain true to its principles of not discriminating against any group based solely on religion or race.  At the same time, because there are, in fact, those who seek to do harm to the United States, it is important that those who do come be thoroughly vetted to ensure the safety and security of all of our citizens.

“We call upon the United States to support a sensitive and responsible immigration policy that adheres to the noblest American tradition of helping those seeking peace and freedom. At the same time, we must do all that we can to ensure the safety and security of free people in an era that presents complex challenges from terrorist threats in a changing world.”
