GENEVA - World Jewish Congress Jewish Diplomat Jenny Aharon delivered a statement on the United Nations Human Rights Council floor on Wednesday on behalf of the WJC, raising the alarm over Iran’s aggression domestically and internationally, including its repeated threats to annihilate Israel.
“The World Jewish Congress is increasingly worried by the danger Iran poses internationally and in the Middle East. Iran is empowering terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, which are posing an ever-increasing threat to the security of Israeli citizens and to civilians in the region as a whole.
As we have stated many times, we also remain deeply alarmed by Iran’s dreadful record when it comes to human rights. Violations are being committed on a regular basis by a regime that in the words of WJC President, Ronald S. Lauder, “continues to subvert the nuclear agreement and exploits the good faith of the international community”.
Furthermore, Iran, has, once again, threatened the existence of Israel. Just recently, Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei has said and I quote: “Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated.” End quote. That this is being said, only 70 years after the Holocaust, should be a concern to all.
Yet, it is Israel that this council chooses to single out at every session, with many countries portraying the Jewish State as the worst human rights violator, meriting its own agenda item. Mr. President, how long can this charade go on?
The World Jewish Congress is therefore asking, once again, for this Council to do more and put its focus where it belongs. Iran must be strongly and decisively condemned.”
