NEW YORK – World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint U.S. Army veteran Elan Carr as State Department’s envoy for antisemitism.
“The World Jewish Congress is extremely encouraged by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to name a special envoy on antisemitism, after two years of the position remaining open, and we trust that Elan Carr will be able to carry out the challenging responsibilities facing him thoroughly and with diligence,” Lauder said. “The World Jewish Congress’ American section has long been advocating for this appointment, and the organization is committed to assisting these efforts in every way possible.”
“Antisemitism is on the rise all over the world, including in the United States, and it is absolutely critical that this global matter is treated with the seriousness that it deserves. The US has long been a leader in the fight against antisemitism, and by filling the position of special envoy, President Trump has taken a positive and strong step toward reasserting his government’s moral leadership on the matter and reassuring Jewish communities that the US stands with them and ready to support them and their well-being,” Lauder added.
Chairman of the World Jewish Congress American section, Rabbi Joel Meyers, said: “We know all too well that antisemitism is moving away from the extreme and into the mainstream, and that we can no longer expect it to disappear without making concrete and calculated efforts to stop it from spinning out of control. The massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue woke Americans up to the very real and present danger of antisemitism, and we must do everything in our power to prevent such atrocities from occurring again. No person, Jewish or non-Jewish alike, should ever have to live in fear for their lives or property, and it is all of our duty to make sure of that.”
