Windows of Kiev synagogue smashed

02 Dec 2004

Several windows at Kiev’s Central Synagogue have been smashed, but nobody was hurt in Wednesday morning’s attack on the temple of the Ukrainian capital. Police officials said they had arrested the perpetrator. The synagogue in central Kiev, also known as the Brodsky Synagogue, has been providing free meals to participants rallying in support of opposition leader Viktor Yuschenko following the country’s contested presidential election. The synagogue’s rabbi called the support for the opposition protestors "a humanitarian act". Some Ukrainian Jews have joined in the demonstrations, but in general, leaders of Jewish organizations have tried to stay neutral in the conflict.
