Experts of Jewish culture and renowned international scholar have gathered in Harbin, the capital of China's Heilongjiang province, to discuss Jewish history and culture. At a three-day international seminar on Jewish history and culture, experts from China, Israel, the United States, Britain, France and Russia as well as diplomats from Israeli embassy in China will exchange views on topics such as Jewish community life in China, Zionism in Harbin, the trend of Russian Jews flocking to China, and the social and cultural organization of the Jewish community. The seminar is sponsored by the Jewish Studies Center with the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, the Association of Former Jewish Residents of China in Israel and the Israel-China Friendship Society. Harbin used to be the largest settlement center for Jews in the 1920s in the Far East, with at one time over 20,000 Jews living in the northeastern Chinese city.
