Eighty-five policemen reportedly were injured in Rome after clashes with soccer fans who chanted anti-Semitic slogans and held banners with swastikas. The violence occurred Sunday during a match between Lazio and Livorno. Some Lazio fans, who are known to be right-wingers, yelled “Jews, Jews” at the Livorno players, yet also yelled “Fedayeen,” referring to the assumed pro-Palestinian sympathies of Livorno fans. On Tuesday, the Lazio team was fined. The same day, violence in the San Siro stadium in Milan resulted in the premature termination of a European Champions League match between the two Milan clubs. Hooligans had thrown flares onto the pitch, one of which injured the goalkeeper of AC Milan. Riots by right-wing thugs in Italian soccer stadiums have become a regular feature in recent months.
