Berlin’s Jewish leader is intensifying efforts to have Europe’s largest Jewish cemetery named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Albert Meyer, the president of the local Jewish community, plans to apply to the United Nations body to better protect the Weissensee cemetery in Berlin and preserve it for future generations. Failing this, Meyer told the Berlin daily newspaper "Die Tageszeitung" that he would push for its recognition as a national German cultural memorial. Located in eastern Berlin, the Jewish cemetery Weissensee has more than 115,000 graves over an area of 103 acres.
