Munich bans neo-Nazi rally on central square

02 May 2005

A German neo-Nazi group has been banned from holding a demonstration in the central square of Munich on 8 May, the eve of the 60th anniversary of Germany's surrender in World War II. The group wanted to gather in Marienplatz, from where the Nazis began their orgy of violence against Jewish synagogues and businesses on 9 November 1938, the so-called "Kristallnacht". According to city authorities, the square surrounding the Munich town hall was "not suitable" for such a demonstration. Norman Bordin, a neo-Nazi militant who is organizing the demonstration, said he would lodge an appeal in the courts against the city's decision. Bordin is a member of the extremist "Kameradschaft Süd", one of whose leaders, Martin Wiese, is currently on trial accused of plotting to blow up a new Jewish center in Munich.
