Jewish day schools in the Boston area are receiving a US$ 45 million gift from a group of local families, the "Boston Globe" newspaper has reported. It is one of the largest donations ever given to the religious day-school movement nationwide. The donors, who preferred to stay anonymous, are giving US$ 10 million to each of the three largest Jewish schools in the Boston area. The schools span American Judaism's theological spectrum: Orthodox, the Reform movement and the Conservative movement. Together the three schools educate about 55 per cent of the 2,800 young people who currently attend the 14 Jewish day schools in the Greater Boston area. The remaining US$ 15 million will be used to assist all day schools in the region. The organization "Combined Jewish Philanthropies" will receive the money and oversee its distribution, which is to take place over the next five years.
