A professorship in Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina (UNC) will be named in honor of UNC alumnus Stuart E. Eizenstat, who served as the lead US negotiator for Holocaust compensation and restitution agreements and was deputy secretary of the Treasury during the Clinton administration. The “Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat Distinguished Professorship in Jewish History and Culture” will be established at UNC's College of Arts and Sciences and be endowed with US$ 1.5 million per year.
Eizenstat negotiated more than US$ 8 billion in compensation from European companies for victims of the Holocaust. He graduated from UNC in 1964 with a degree in Political Science and later also received an honorary degree from the university. He is currently a partner at the Washington law firm of Covington and Burling LLP.
