Jewish prisoner wins right to wear yarmulke

04 Aug 2005

A prisoner in the US state of Georgia has won the right to wear a yarmulke (Jewish skullcap) in prison. Robert Benning was to receive the yarmulke on Wednesday after the Georgia Department of Corrections determined he could wear it within the prison system, according to the Washington-based Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which supported him. Benning filed against the Georgia prison system in 2002. The US Supreme Court ruled in a separate case earlier this year that prisoners’ religious needs should be accommodated unless they conflict with a compelling government interest. Benning is also pushing to have kosher meals in prison.
