An Israeli book on Nazi Germany and the Shoah has won an international prize. "Hitler, the Allies and the Jews," by Hebrew University political scientist Shlomo Aronson, was awarded the 2005 Sybil Halpern Milton Memorial Book Prize, it was announced Monday. The US-based German Studies Association, which bestowed the prize, noted that Aronson's book detailed how the exigencies of war and diplomacy, the Allied insistence on unconditional surrender and the need to maintain a multinational alliance against Nazi Germany conflicted with and ultimately made impossible the rescue of European Jewry. The Jews, Aronson writes, were caught in an "unstoppable doomsday machine."
