01 Apr 2005

Milton Green, a Jewish American athlete who famously refused to compete in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, has died in Florida at the age of 91. A former world-record hurdler, Green refused to take part in the Berlin Games, which Hitler designed as a showcase for Nazi ideology and German superiority. Green was the captain of Harvard’s track and field team in 1936. He later became a member of the Harvard Athletic Hall of Fame and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Israel. His story is featured at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.
