In Germany, five neo-Nazis have been convicted of involvement in plans to explode a bomb during the dedication of the new Munich synagogue and Jewish community center in 2003. Some of the defendants, three women and two men, were convicted of membership in a terrorist organization, a charge rarely applied in Germany against extreme right groups. The Munich court handed out suspended prison sentences ranging from 16 to 24 months. Police had seized 1.7 kilograms of TNT and 14 kilograms of other explosives as well as two hand grenades in raids in fall 2003. The German president and top Jewish leaders attended the dedication ceremony on 9 November 2003. The plot's alleged ringleader and head of the neo-Nazi group "Kameradschaft Süd", Martin Wiese, is being tried separately in Munich. He has denied that an attack had been planned.
