Controversial synagogue plans in New Jersey

28 Jul 2005

Plans to open a high school for Orthodox Jewish boys at a New Jersey synagogue have run into opposition from local residents. JTA quotes the local newspaper "Asbury Park Press" as saying that citizens of Roosevelt, including many Jews, have initiated a petition to recall mayor Neil Marko, a synagogue trustee, for supporting the plans. While opponents of the synagogue say the small town of 950 people lacked the financial and physical resources to house a high school, others suspect a subtle, anti-religious bias. “That’s the most disgusting thing about this whole thing, that Jews should be so vile and bigoted against other Jews,” said Elly Shapiro, who serves as president of the synagogue. But Lynn Lawson, a local Reform Jew who is against the school, said she was concerned that Orthodox Jews were too insular. “I’ve had a problem with Orthodox Jews looking down on me,” she told the newspaper.
