Christians and Jews join to support the opening of new mosque in Barcelona

09 Sep 2004

Representatives of the Christian and Jewish faiths have expressed their support for the controversial opening of a mosque by Pakistani immigrants in the Spanish city of Barcelona. Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists and the Jewish Community joined in an initiative which defends the freedom to express and live one's religious belief. Rabbi Jacob Carciente also lent his "unconditional support" to the project. He was quoted by a newspaper as saying that Muslims had every right to have a place to pray. Neighborhood associations have been campaigning against the Muslim temple. Barcelona's city council already approved the project, on condition that some works be done on the site.
