Celebrations in Tbilisi for 100th anniversary of Great Synagogue

29 Oct 2004

Celebrations have taken place in the capital of the former Soviet republic of Georgia to mark the 100th anniversary of the "Great Synagogue" there. Tuesday’s celebration in Tbilisi was the centerpiece of a festival of Georgian-Jewish friendship, held under the auspices of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. The events celebrating Georgia’s Jewish heritage are being held in various locations across the Caucasus Mountains republic, including in the town of Mtskheta, established 2,500 years ago and regarded as the site of the first Jewish settlement in Georgia. Some 10,000 Jews currently live in Georgia.
