British Jewish politician pelted with eggs

08 Apr 2005

Oona King, a member of parliament (MP) for the British Labour Party, has been pelted with eggs and onions as she attended a memorial to Jewish war dead. King, the black Jewish Labour MP for the London constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow, was attacked when she joined mourners to commemorate 60 years since the Hughes Mansions Disaster, when 134 people, almost all Jewish, were killed by the last V2 missile dropped by the Nazis over London. King enraged some Muslims by supporting the war in Iraq. The eggs missed her, but one hit 89-year-old war veteran Louis Lewis. Oona King told the crowd that the attack was one of the "saddest" things she had ever witnessed. Campaigning for the general election on 5 May began last week across Britain. 55,000 Muslims of Bangladeshi origin live in the electoral district – more than half of its total population.
