A Belgian television station has scrapped a program that would have shown how to prepare Adolf Hitler's favorite meal. TV chef Jerien Meus was filmed catching trout in Bavaria, before heading to Hitler's former 'Eagle's Nest' retreat in the Bavarian Alps to cook the fish in butter sauce. However, the show, scheduled for Tuesday on the public broadcaster VRT, infuriated the Belgian Jewish community and survivor groups. "There was a wrong perception that the show about Hitler would humanize or, worse, glorify Hitler," said a VRT statement.
Michael Freilich, editor of 'Joods Actueel', a Jewish weekly based in Antwerp, condemned the program as "presenting Hitler as a simple man of the people. It is worrying to see that Hitler is turned into a banal figure, especially for the younger generation," he said. More than 25,000 Belgian Jews perished in Nazi death camps. VRT continues to defend "the content of the program but preferred to withdraw it from scheduling on account of the controversy," according to the statement.
