Argentina Jewish community responds to Buenos Aires synagogue incident

BUENOS AIRES - Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas (DAIA), the umbrella organization representing the Jewish community in Argentina, has expressed its solidarity with the rabbi and the parishioners of the Mikdash Yosef synagogue in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, after an incident on Friday night in which two indigent people who approached looking for food screamed antisemitic epithets.

In its statement, DAIA noted that the perpetrators were apparently homeless people invoking age-old prejudices installed in society, and that the incident was not carried out with specific anti-Jewish intentions.

“Only the constant task of research and education will allow us to protect our community, together with the relevant government agencies responsible in that area,” DAIA said in its statement.
