Former Baggies striker Nicolas Anelka has caused a fresh storm over the 'quenelle' saga that saw him sacked by Albion in March for gross misconduct.

Anelka appeared for charity alongside former Hawthorns team-mate Youssouf Mulumbu wearing a quenelle T-shirt.

The former France international has flown to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help his friend celebrate the first anniversary of the Youssouf Mulumbu Foundation.

But Anelka was wearing a shirt depicting the controversial quenelle gesture when he sat alongside Mulumbu at a press conference in Kinshasa yesterday.

The shirt featured a Superman logo which appeared to have been adapted to depict the quenelle, which has been described by critics in France as an inverted Nazi salute.

The T-shirts are available from the website of French comedian Dieudonne, who invented the quenelle and has been condemned as anti-Semitic in his homeland. Anelka's appearance came on the same day Hull striker Yannick Sagbo was banned for two matches for a tweet he sent supporting Anelka's use of the quenelle gesture.
