Iran Must Be Stopped

As the world watches warily, the signs coming from Iran are ominous indeed. The dictator continues to threaten, thousands of nuclear centrifuges spin at the speed of sound, Russia sells advanced ground to air missiles to a Syria under the Iranian thumb, and intelligence estimates predict a nuclear capability as soon as 2009. And although some may think they have the luxury to continue to bide their time, these signs cannot be ignored.

The one hundred Israeli fighter jets engaged in exercises over the Mediterranean did not go unnoticed by the international community and were reported widely in the Western media. The crystal clear message was signaled to Europe, to America and, of course, to Iran. Israel often performs these kinds of maneuvers in order to be ready for any surprises, and sent a similar message a few weeks ago to Hezbollah and Syria following what happened in Beirut last month. Just as important was the fact that it was the Pentagon that reported on the Mediterranean exercises in order to make sure that Tehran got the right message, something that seems to have eluded the president of Iran up until now. With characteristic effrontery, Ahmadinejad taunted the West about how it has failed in its attempts to solve its nuclear crisis and claimed victory in his nuclear enrichment program. He again rejected the initiative of the six major countries, having the gall to say that he will consider the incentives but absolutely will not meet the requirements.

Despite Javier Solana’s efforts on behalf of the EU, options are narrowing down for the West. The Europeans announced more sanctions this week, including the targeting of Bank Melli, Iran’s largest bank. Stronger statements emanating from Britain, France and Germany, in addition to other countries, are an indication that they are finally hearing the message. Others are still deaf. Russia plans to sell advanced anti-aircraft missiles to Iran and finish work on the nuclear reactor in Bushehr, a project they rushed to complete in the wake of the NIE report. Chinese companies invest in Iran, the Swiss and Austrians move towards multibillion dollar gas deals, and the head of the IAEA, having played no small role in this crisis, announces that he will resign if Iran is attacked.

Israel cannot afford to ignore this escalating threat, though it certainly does not seek a confrontation, particularly as it suffers a rain of rockets and mortar shells from Gaza during a “truce” with Hamas. The conclusions Israel drew from the events of the summer of 2006 emphasized the necessity for preparedness and Israel wants to make sure she is prepared. Simply put—Israel does not want war but neither does she want to be annihilated.

Iran's Proxies

The contrails of smoke emitted by the long-range fighter aircraft on maneuvers over the eastern Mediterranean are telegraphing an important message to the Europeans, to the United States, to the rest of the world – you have to take this seriously, it is getting worse. America, Europe, even the Russians have said we cannot abide a nuclear Iran but in the meantime it is becoming a reality. Many are not happy about the notion of attacking Iran. The Foreign Minister of Russia decried this idea, warning against the use of force, emphasizing that there is no proof that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. But many other countries are beginning to feel differently, including an increasing number of those who repeatedly remind us that they are geographically closer to Iran than we are.

This week, a member of Congress, Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA), said that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is obsolete and that the dangers of nuclear material in the hands of this rogue regime are clear. Those in the international community who continue to treat this lightly are simply going to have to understand what this really means and that time is not on our side. They have to look up and read the signals.

Iran To Face New EU SanctionsBritish PM Gordon Brown announced new European sanctions against Iranian banking, oil and natural gas interests, signaling a growing willingness by allies to join President Bush’s sanctioning of Iran. The EU approved the sanctions, including an assets freeze on Iran’s largest bank. Europe has also expressed concerns about Obama’s campaign pledge to begin direct talks with Iran without preconditions – the European-led offer of incentives is conditioned on Tehran’s suspension of enrichment.
