Six terror suspects arrested in Istanbul over 2003 synagogue bombings

17 September 2009

Six people were detained in the Turkish city of Istanbul for their suspected involvement in several suicide bombings, including of two synagogues, in 2003. The six were charged for their alleged roles in the al-Qaeda attacks on synagogues and a bank branch that left dozens dead. Trucks crashed into two synagogues in Istanbul carrying explosives, killing two dozen people. The bombing of the HSBC branch in the Turkish metropolis killed 30 people.

Seven militants, including a Syrian al Qaeda member, have already been sentenced to life in prison for their connection with the bombings. Officials said the latest detentions came as the culmination of a lengthy investigation into the 2003 attacks. The men were taken into custody in raids that took place in a number of districts in Istanbul.
