Israel criticizes IAEA for failing to report about Iranian weapons program

31 August 2009

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has said that a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week did not refer to Iranian efforts to obtain nuclear arms or Tehran’s continued attempts to deceive and to conceal those efforts. ”It is a harsh report, and yet it does not reflect all the information known to the IAEA regarding Iran’s efforts to continue to pursue its military program. Israel expects the international community to take substantive and prompt steps to halt Iran’s military nuclear program,” the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem said in a statement.

The IAEA report said Iran continued to enrich uranium in violation of UN sanctions, though at a slightly slower rate in recent months. “Iran has not suspended its enrichment-related activities or its work on heavy-water-related projects as required by the Security Council,” the reports says, adding that the agency could not exclude the possibility that there is a military purpose to Iran’s nuclear program.
