International Conference on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe

On 24 & 25 May 2007 an International Conference on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe was held in Luxembourg.

The conference gathered together the world’s most senior experts on nuclear proliferation, among them Dr. Mohamed Al-Baradei, Hans Blix and Rolf Ekeus, former US Secretary of Defense William Perry and many other leading authorities from Israel, US, Russia, India, Japan and many other countries.

The agenda was to analyze the dangers the world is facing today from the proliferation of nuclear weaponry, both by so-called rogue countries as well as the intense dangers of “nuclear terrorism.” It was vital to deal with these issues as a threat to the international community that must be addressed immediately and not only as a threat for the state of Israel.

The participants focused on the Iranian nuclear program and the dangers to the whole world from this program. It was emphasized time and again that not only long range missiles can reach many capitals in Europe from Iran, but also the potential of the Iranians to equip terrorist organizations around the world with so- called “dirty bombs” must be faced with the utmost urgency. The main theme in the conference was that this issue is far too important to be left as a political struggle between the superpowers.

There was strong agreement between the participants to call for fast, strong and effective concrete steps that the international community should implement concerning the Iranian threat. Participants called for the ongoing maintenance of this forum on an annual basis, due to its great importance, and we concur it would be very important to do so.
