Inter-Religious

'Fundamental Rights and Democracy' conference

On 19 June 2006 a conference entitled 'Fundamental Rights and Democracy' was held in Cairo, Egypt. The conference was organized by Oasis, (www.cisro.it) a Venice based international study and research centre founded by Cardinal Angelo Scola, Patriarch of Venice, in 2004.

Since it was founded Oasis has been a place for inter-religious dialogue between Christians and Muslims. For this conference, for the first time, representatives of the World Jewish Congress were invited to participate in the dialogue and reflections on the relations between the West and the Islamic world. Israel Singer, chairman of the WJC Policy Council, attended the conference and gave a presentation on Judaism and Democracy.

The conference focussed on issues relating to human rights and democracy in the western and Islamic traditions, in light of the tensions and misunderstandings between the West and Islam and their different visions of religious freedom, of democracy and of freedom of expression.

The conference was held in the University of Al-Azhar, the oldest Islamic academic institution.
