Nesiya Institute
Kehillah Experience in Israel - 6 weeks
(Kehillah means community in Hebrew.)
Explore Judaism and Israel through a combination of travel, community service,
outdoor adventure, workshops in the performing and visual arts, community building
and creative study. Meet and work with fascinating Israeli personalities including
expert nature guides, visual artists, writers, musicians, actors, scholars, and
community activists.
Travel with Israeli peers, interact with diverse Israeli
communities and learn about the Jewish value of Tikkun
Olam, repairing the world, in a series of three intensive
service projects, one in each region of Israel. Kehillah
projects have included building playgrounds, painting murals,
and leading activities with teens and children. Projects
have taken place across Israel and have included: a Bedouin
village, a residential school for children in the foster
care system, an absorption center for Ethiopian immigrants,
and a day care program for the developmentally disabled.
Nesiya programs observe the common denominators that allow
Jews to live together. Programs are kosher, and no full
group activities are conducted that violate traditional
observance of Shabbat. Religious observance is optional.
As one past participant said, "having definite beliefs
isn't as important as the willingness to explore what your
own beliefs are and what other people believe."
Every Nesiya program follows a regional structure, starting
from the Negev desert, moving to the Galilee and then arriving
in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Each program combines a variety
of hands-on experiences, including outdoor adventure, arts
workshops, community service and creative study of Jewish
texts.
