Jewish monument in Poland desecrated by vandals - then swiftly cleaned by local priest

The World Jewish Congress praises three Polish citizens, including a priest, who took it upon themselves to clean a monument commemorating the Jews murdered in the town Otwock, after it was defaced with swastikas over the weekend.

“The World Jewish Congress is grateful to Fr Bogdan Sankowski, funeral parlor owner Sławomir Moc, and employee Marian Czarnecki, for refusing to stand by in the face of hateful vandalism and desecration of a solemn Jewish monument in central Poland,” said WJC CEO and Executive Vice President Robert Singer.

“This righteous act of defiance and solidarity should serve as model behavior for citizens of all countries in our collective struggle to preserve the memory of those who were callously murdered during the Holocaust.”
