Members of an Israeli youth group have established a school for Middle Eastern refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos with classes in both Arabic and Persian, Jerusalem Online has reported.
Members of the HaShomer HaTzair Zionist youth movement established the school on the island, which is a vital transit stop on the migrant route to Europe, together with refugees with backgrounds in educations. Only around five percent of refugee children on Lesbos attend local schools.
Explaining the decision to establish the school, HaShomer HaTzair refugee coordinator Yair Libel said that he believed that "our task is to inspire hope and stimulate positive action among the refugees themselves and not to create a dependent relationship that preserves the weak position that they are in."
